Sir Francis Beaufort KCB FRS FRGS FRAS MRIA (/ˈbfərt/; 27 May 1774 – 17 December 1857) was an Anglo-Irish hydrographer, the creator of the Beaufort cipher and the Beaufort scale, and a naval officer.
