Solomon Islands campaign


The Solomon Islands campaign was a major campaign of the Pacific War of World War II. The campaign began with Japanese landings and occupation of several areas in the British Solomon Islands and Bougainville, in the Territory of New Guinea, during the first six months of 1942.

The Solomon Islands Campaign: Guadalcanal After the US strategic victories at the Battles of the Coral Sea (May 7-8, 1942) and Midway (June 4-7, 1942), the Japanese Imperial Navy was no longer capable of major offensive campaigns, which permitted the Allies to start their own offensive in the Pacific.

The Solomon Islands Campaign launched with the first task of this three-part plan and started on August 7th, 1942 when US Marines landed on Guadalcanal, one of the major islands of the Solomons. These landings launched Japan and the Allies into the Guadalcanal Campaign, which ran until February 9th, 1943 and ended in an Allied victory.
