Did you know that Petrified Forest is perfect for exploration and discovery? While the park has all the wonders known for a century, there are many new adventures and discoveries to share. There are backcountry hikes into areas never open before such as Red Basin. There are new exhibits that bring the stories to life.

For a small park, there were lots of interesting things to see : Painted Desert, petroglyphs, the Blue Mesa, Pueblo communities, petrified wood, and a house made of petrified wood. We really enjoyed our experiences at this park!

Petrified Forest National Park is an American national park in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about 346 square miles (900 square kilometers), encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands.

Petrified Forest National Park provides access to many outdoor activities, and the best way to enjoy and experience it is on foot. Designated hiking trails range in length from less than a half-mile to three miles, and each trail promises you a breathtaking view of the surrounding Painted Desert.

Petrified Forest National Park is a surprising area of scenic wonders and interesting science. It is comprised of two main areas. The southern portion of the park is home to one of the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, as well as natural log bridges and 225 million year old fossils.

The Petrified Forest area was designated a National Monument on December 8, 1906. The Painted Desert was added later, and on December 9, 1962, the whole monument received National Park status. Today, the park covers 93,533 acres.

Petrified Forest National Park is situated in the northern reaches of Arizona's high desert climate, which means its temperatures vary widely -- both by season and sometimes within a single day. July highs can easily reach over 100 F, while the winter sees temperatures below freezing and occasional snow storms.

Easy access to I-40 gets you to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park (20 minutes). Take a day trip to the Grand Canyon (2.5 hours), Canyon de Chelly (1.5+ hours), Monument Valley (2.5+ hours), or Fort Apache (1.5 hours). Walk around the rim of Meteor Crater, less than an hour west.

Rainbow Forest Museum. At the south end of the park is the Rainbow Forest Museum (off Hwy. 180, 8am-5pm daily Sept. 20-Apr. 4, 7am-7pm daily Apr. 5-Sept. 19).
