Everything you need to know about transit fares and tolls in New York Find out how much it costs to ride the subway, the bus, and railroads in the New York area, how transfers work, your options for reduced fares, and where to buy tickets or a MetroCard.

The fare for a subway or local bus ride is $2.75*. The fare for an express bus ride is $6.75. If you qualify for reduced fare, you can travel for half fare. Up to three children 44 inches tall and under ride for free on subways and local buses when accompanied by a fare paying adult.

When the New York City Transit Authority was created in July 1953, the fare was raised to 15 cents (equivalent to $1.43 in 2019) and a token was issued. The tokens were changed periodically as prices changed. The first token change occurred in 1970 when the fare was raised to 30 cents.

The fare for a subway is $2.75, but by choosing to pay with MetroCard, rides can cost less. Up to three children who are 44 inches tall and under can ride subways for free as long as they are accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

About reduced fares The reduced fare is half the base fare. (For example, the base fare for subways and local buses is $2.75, so the reduced fare is $1.35.) Your reduced-fare card will have your name and photo on it.

To save time, buy your return trip ticket before traveling to New York. Valid weekly/monthly rail passes are accepted for free travel on connecting light rail and bus service. NYC Transit tickets must be purchased separately. Customers using rail tickets must purchase NJ TRANSIT light rail or bus tickets separately for travel.
