Magic angle

The magic angle is a precisely defined angle, the value of which is approximately 54.7356°. The magic angle is a root of a second-order Legendre polynomial, P2(cos θ) = 0, and so any interaction which depends on this second-order Legendre polynomial vanishes at the magic angle.

The important point, however, is the angle at which the top layer of graphene is positioned: precisely 1.1 degrees, the "magic" angle that produces the quantum effect. "It's such a weird glitch in nature," Nuckolls said, "that it is exactly this one angle that needs to be achieved."

The magic angle is an MRI artifact which occurs on sequences with a short TE (less than 32ms; T1W sequences, PD sequences and gradient echo sequences). It is confined to regions of tightly bound collagen at 54.74° from the main magnetic field (B 0), and appears hyperintense, thus potentially being mistaken for tendinopathy.

In 2018, MIT scientists led by Pablo Jarillo-Herrero and Yuan Cao discovered that when two sheets of graphene are stacked together at a slightly offset "magic" angle, the new "twisted" graphene structure can become either an insulator, completely blocking electricity from flowing through the material, or paradoxically, a superconductor, able to let electrons fly through without resistance.

The magic angle effect is important in the clinical MR imaging of certain tissues that are highly structured and are oriented obliquely to the main magnetic field (especially tendons, cartilage, and peripheral nerves). The MR signal may spuriously increase near the magic angle mimicking pathology.

Benschop: "It sounds a bit mad, but at a magic angle of 1.1 degrees, electrons in the two layers start to sense each other more; they're able to interact. That results in unique characteristics,...

Understanding the "magic angle"—a specific orientation between the stacked graphene that yields special electric properties—could pave the way to realizing the dream of room-temperature superconductors, which could transmit enormous electric currents while producing zero heat. But first: what is the magic angle?

The magic angle can be used in certain conditions to visualize tendons and ligaments in positive contrast, allowing classic analysis with T1 and T2-weighting as well as studies of enhancement after the injection of a contrast agent or with magnetization transfer.

Magic angle artifact is unique because its appearance depends on where tissue lies in correlation to the external magnetic field. When tissues containing collagen (typically found in tendons) lie approximately 55° to the vector of our external magnetic field, they may be demonstrated at high intensity signal in our image. This artifact is typically found when performing exams in the shoulder ...

In magic angle graphene, the electrons come in four flavours: spin "up" or spin "down", and two "valleys". Each moiré site can thus hold up to four electrons, one of each flavour. Researchers already knew that this system behaves as a simple insulator when all moiré sites are completely full (four electrons per site).

Highly tunable moiré superconductivity is observed in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene, and observations suggest that this superconductor can be tuned close to the crossover to a two ...

Magic angle spinning (MAS) has been routinely employed for solid-state NMR spectroscopy. At the magic angle, 54.7°, broadening effects from slow or restricted molecular motion (dipolar interactions and chemical shift anisotropy), quadrupolar interactions, and magnetic field inhomogeneity (magnetic susceptibility differences) are minimized.

When one layer is rotated to a "magic angle" of around 1.1 degrees with respect to the other, the system becomes a superconductor — meaning it conducts electricity with zero resistance.

Pomeranchuk effect in magic angle graphene, revealing an exotic transition between two phases: A (Fermi) liquid phase, where the spatial positions of electrons are disordered but their magnetic moments (arrows) are perfectly aligned, and a solid-like phase where the electrons are ordered in space but their magnetic moments are fluctuating freely.

Magic angle spinning (MAS) is commonly used in nuclear magnetic resonance of solids to improve spectral resolution. Rather than using cylindrical rotors for MAS, we demonstrate that spherical rotors can be spun stably at the magic angle. Spherical rotors conserve valuable space in the probe head and simplify sample exchange and microwave coupling for dynamic nuclear polarization.

When one layer is rotated to a "magic angle" of around 1.1 degrees with respect to the other, the system becomes a superconductor -- meaning it conducts electricity with zero resistance.

The concept of "magic angle" was first put by Bistritzer and MacDonald in 2011, when they addressed the formation of moiré Bloch bands due to the moiré pattern periodicity in the continuum Dirac model of TBG. 5 Specifically, they predicted that the velocity at the Dirac point oscillates with the twist angle and quenches at a discrete set ...

"magic angle." When researchers rotate the sheets by precisely 1.1°, the twist creates a large-scale "moiré" pattern—the atom-scale equivalent of the darker bands seen when two grids are juxtaposed. By bring-ing thousands of atoms together, the moiré allows them to act in unison, like super-A model of twisted graphene reveals a

For twist angles of about 1.1°-the first 'magic' angle-the electronic band structure of this 'twisted bilayer graphene' exhibits flat bands near zero Fermi energy, resulting in correlated insulating states at half-filling. Magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has recently emerged as a rich platform to explore strong correlations, superconductivity and magnetism and band topology.

When magic-angle graphene is placed in a small magnetic field, it generates persistent currents across the structure, due to the formation of what are known as "Landau levels." These Landau levels, and hence the persistent currents, are very sensitive to the local twist angle, for instance, resulting in a magnetic field with a different ...
