6 Franklin's Lost Expedition. Photo credit: Wikimedia Commons. In 1845, the British explorer Sir John Franklin set off with a small team to navigate the last unmapped part of the Northwest Passage. Traveling on the HMS Erebus and the aptly named HMS Terror, they departed England in May.

This particular expedition is much more of a mystery than some of the others on this list (certainly not Fawcett's), mostly because of the lack of documentation. However, it does count as one with a high death toll. 129 men total were lost when Captain John Franklin departed England to find the still sought-after Northern Passage.

Lost expeditions are voyages that end up going wrong in some way, which usually results in the death or disappearance of the explorers themselves. Exploring is a dangerous job, but for most explorers the thrill and excitement is worth the risk. Although most lost expeditions date back hundreds of years, some are as recent as the 1980's.

Franklin's lost expedition became the stuff of legends, and dozens of expeditions were led over the centuries to find it. It wasn't until 2014 that the wreck of his ship was actually located. In 1848, Ross commanded the first expedition in search of Franklin. However, heavy ice delayed his journey and winter caught up to him on Somerset Island.
