Lake Waiau is a high-elevation lake located at 3,970 m (13,020 ft) above sea level on Mauna Kea, on the island of Hawaiʻi. It is arguably one of the highest lakes in the United States.

Lake Waiau is the highest lake on the Big Island, the state of Hawai'i, and the entire Pacific Rim. The Big Island's only other lake, Green Lake, is located on private land in the Puna District. This shallow lake's existence is a mystery.

Lake Waiau is a small lake just below the summit of MaunaKea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. It also is one of the highest lakes in the United States with an elevation of 13020 ft (3,970 m) and is the only alpine lake in the state of Hawaiʻi. This lake is very interesting both from a mythological and scientific perspective.

Contrary to its name which means "swirling water" in Hawaiian, Lake Waiau is usually placid and freezes in winter. Aquatic insects such as midges and beetles can be found breeding in the water. The lake is considered a sacred site were rituals are performed occasionally.
