Dr. Harmit Malik studies genetic conflict, the competition between genes and proteins with opposing functions that drives evolutionary change. His research could have ...

The Harmit Malik Lab at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is interested in evolutionary studies of genetic conflict to gain insight into their mechanisms and consequences. We study genetic conflicts primarily in three systems: Drosophila, primates and yeast.

Harmit Singh Malik (born 1973) is an Indian American evolutionary biologist who is a professor and associate director at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He was awarded the 2022 Genetics Society of America Edward Novitski Prize. Early life and education.

Harmit Malik studies conflicts that occur in our genomes as different genetic entities try to maximize their evolutionary success. Malik and his team are interested in understanding the mechanisms and consequences of these "molecular arms races" and how they drive recurrent genetic innovation, from the perspective of both evolutionary biology and human disease.

Dr. Harmit Malik. Harmit Malik grew up in the city of Bombay (now renamed Mumbai) in India. He attended the Indian Institute of Technology where he received a degree in Chemical Engineering. There, he was introduced to molecular biology thanks largely to the generous mentoring of Dr. K. Krishnamurthy Rao in the nascent Biotechnology Center.

"Harmit's work requires a multi-disciplinary approach and he nimbly moves between organisms and techniques to address whatever mechanism is at the root of a genetic conflict," said Basic Sciences Director, fellow HHMI Investigator and previous Novitski Prize winner Dr Sue Biggins.. Malik first became interested in genetic conflict during his postdoctoral training in the laboratory of ...

Harmit Singh Malik describes his scientific research as an "evolutionary arms race," whose combatants are microscopic genes, each battling to attain evolutionary dominance over its neighbors and, in so doing, assure its long-term survival. He traces the evolutionary histories of genes from different organisms, in order to understand the ...

Harmit Malik studies the causes and consequences of genetic conflicts that take place between different genomes (e.g., host-virus interactions, mitochondrial conflicts with nuclear genomes) or between components of the same genome (e.g., chromosomal competition at centromeric regions). He is interested in understanding these "molecular arms ...

Harmit Malik received his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and his PhD from the University of Rochester. He moved to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle for post-doctoral work and decided to stay, starting his own lab in the Division of Basic Sciences in 2003. Malik...

Dr. Harmit Malik in his lab at Fred Hutch. Robert Hood / Fred Hutch. Malik has pondered such questions for a long time. Most recently, his research has yielded important insights into the evolutionary struggle between viruses and humans. Ultimately, Malik hopes this research may lead to new drugs to fight HIV.

Two Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center investigators have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.Evolutionary biologist Dr. Harmit Malik and molecular biologist Dr. Steven Henikoff were honored for their innovative contributions to our understanding of fundamental biological processes. Harmit Malik studies rapidly evolving genes to further understand and discover genetic conflicts and the role selection plays in the shaping of our genomes. His lab focuses on the rapid reciprocal evolution of the host and the pathogen proteins that result from their interactions. Another area of focus is on expanding the list of categories to ...
