Growth medium


A growth medium or culture medium is a solid, liquid, or semi-solid designed to support the growth of a population of microorganisms or cells via the process of cell proliferation [1] or small plants like the moss Physcomitrella patens. [2] Different types of media are used for growing different types of cells. [3]

Growth media contain a variety of nutrients necessary to sustain the growth of microorganisms. There are two commonly used physical forms of growth media: liquid media and solid growth media. A liquid medium is called a broth (image 2). Solid growth media usually contains agar (image 1), which is a mixture of polysaccharides derived from red algae.
