Ford Escort (North America)


The North American version of the Ford Escort is a range of cars that was sold by Ford from the 1981 to 2003 model years. The direct successor of the Ford Pinto, the Escort also largely overtook the role of the European-imported Ford Fiesta as the smallest vehicle in the Ford model line in North America.

The Ford Escort was a compact car introduced in 1980 for the 1981 model year. It quickly gained popularity and became Ford's best-selling car in its second year in the U.S. The Escort was Ford's first front-wheel-drive car manufactured in North America and replaced the smaller Ford Fiesta.

Introduced in Q4 of 1980 for release the following model year, the 1981 Ford Escort is the 1st-gen Escort, initially marketed as Mercury Lynx by Lincoln-Mercury. The model, amongst other things, was the smallest Ford vehicle sold in the North American market. It could trace its lineage directly to the Ford Pinto.
