Alan Sealey


Alan William Sealey (born Hampton, London, UK, 24 February 1942 - died February 1996) was an English footballer. Sealey, an outside right, initially played for Leyton Orient in 1960, before moving to West Ham United, in a player exchange for Dave Dunmore, where he played from 1961 to 1967.

Alan Sealey, who passed away in February 1996 at the age of 53, netted two outstanding strikes in the space of three second-half minutes at Wembley, securing the Hammers’ victory and their first and, to date, only European trophy. Alan Sealey, the man who scored the goals which secured the biggest win in West Ham United's history, was born on this day in 1942. The late winger, whose brace at Wembley secured the European Cup Winners' Cup with a 2-0 win over West German side TSV 1860 Munich in May 1965, would have celebrated his 78th birthday today.

Alan Sealey was born in Canning town and raised in Walton Road, just nine houses down from the junction with Green Street, where the old Upton Park stadium loomed. Despite this, it was Leyton Orient who first spotted him scoring goals as a teenager in the local leagues on Sunday mornings and invited him along for a trial with their youth team.

Alan Sealey saw flickers of him in Eric Cantona, in the days when he took a close interest in Manchester United because his nephew, goalkeeper Les Sealey, had become a cult hero at Old Trafford towards the end of his own career.
