(August 2021) Japan during World War II refers to the history of the Empire of Japan during World War II. This includes the invasion of the Republic of China, the annexation of French Indochina and the subsequent invasion of British India, the Pacific War and the surrender of Japan . Prelude

Strategic bombing and urban area bombing began in 1944 after the long-range B-29 Superfortress bomber entered service, first deployed from China and thereafter the Mariana Islands. B-29 raids from those islands began on 17 November 1944, and lasted until 15 August 1945, the day of Japanese surrender. [2]

LeMay continued throughout the closing months of 1944 and into 1945. But it was still 1,500 miles from Saipan to Tokyo, a long flight even for the B-29s.

A vicious land, sea, and air battle raged for nearly three months. Like the bloodshed on Iwo Jima, Okinawa's savagery suggested a terrible death toll could follow in the anticipated invasion of Japan's home islands. While US Marines overcame Japanese defenses in northern Okinawa by April 18, opposition in the south proved formidable.
