Spades (suit)


Spades form one of the four suits of playing cards in the standard French deck. It is a black heart turned upside down with a stalk at its base and symbolises the pike or halberd, two medieval weapons. In French the suit of Spades is known as the Pique and in German as the Pik.

Spades may not be led until either some player has played a spade (on the lead of another suit, of course), or the leader has nothing but spades left in hand. Playing the first spade is known as "breaking" spades. A Boston is when one team gets all 13 tricks in a round.
