The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine, all-weather, maneuverable fighter designed to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat. It is considered among the most successful modern fighters with over 100 aerial combat victories with no losses in dogfights. The Eagle first flew in July 1972, and entered service in 1976.

McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle The McDonnel Douglas F-15 Eagle is an all-weather, extremely maneuverable, tactical fighter designed to permit the Air Force to gain and maintain air superiority in aerial combat. Also of note, it is the first American fighter aircraft developed specifically for air-to-air combat since the F-86 Sabre designed in 1947.

McDonnell Douglas won the contest to create the F-15 and the aircraft it designed was a beauty. It was large, weighing about 40,000 pounds in combat trim (less than the F-4 Phantom II that it replaced). Its two Pratt and Whitney F100-PW-100 engines each produced 14,670 pounds of thrust at military power and 23,800 pounds in full afterburner.

F-15 Eagle Production and Development In 1967, the United States Air Force requested the design of McDonnell Douglas aircraft to fit the demand for a committed air superiority fighter. In July 1972, the first F-15 Eagle (F-15A) fighter aircraft took its maiden flight. After a year, in July 1973, the F-15B made its first flight.

McDonnell Douglas, the manufacturer of the F-15 Eagle, knew it had a winner on its hands with the plane. It was the first U.S. fighter with greater engine thrust than weight, allowing it to accelerate vertically like a rocket. And it was highly maneuverable, so it could out fly its likely adversary in the Foxbat and other MiG jets.
