The former king of build-your-own-PC retailers announced its defunct status on Wednesday, following rumors of mass firings and site failures. Fry's could not survive the pandemic and the shift to online shopping, and had to rely on consignment-based selling that was unattractive to manufacturers.

The Silicon Valley institution of Fry's Electronics, one of the last big brick-and-mortar electronics store chains in the US, has made the difficult decision to shut down its operations and close its business permanently. The company, which started as a one-stop-shop and online resource for high-tech professionals, faced challenges from online retailers and Covid-19 pandemic.
