Fort Dupont is a residential neighborhood located in southeast Washington, D.C., east of the Anacostia River. It is bounded by East Capitol Street to the north, Fort Dupont Park to the south, Minnesota Avenue to the west, and Fort Chaplin Park to the east and northeast. Fort Dupont has a population of approximately 7,050.

Fort Dupont Park is a 376-acre (1.52 km 2) wooded park under the management of the National Park Service located in Washington, DC.The name of the park comes from the old Civil War earthwork fort that lies within the park. The fort was one of several designed to defend Washington from a Confederate attack during the Civil War. There are few remains of the actual fortifications.

Fort DuPont is a unique mixed-use community. Initially it was a planned military landscape of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries due to its strategic location on the Delaware River. It was operated as a military base until 1947. After being decommissioned the property was sold to the State of Delaware in 1947.

The Canal District, tucked between the Parade Ground and the historic Branch Canal, is made up of a total of 80 town, carriage, and single-family homes. Carriage homes overlook the Branch Canal, Delaware City Marina, and the town promenade. A walking path on the Fort DuPont side will trace the route of the fort's original Canal Street.

To access this trail, park at the Fort Dupont Activity Center. There is a crosswalk from the parking lot across Fort Dupont Drive and onto this trail. The Hollow Tree trail is about .25 miles and begins with some rolling terrain and then steadily climbs uphill. This trail has steps/water bars on the steeper part of the trail.
