Ellicott's Rock


Ellicott's Rock is a survey marker placed in 1811 by Andrew Ellicott as part of his survey to resolve the boundary dispute between the U.S. states of Georgia and North Carolina. The boundary dispute involved a brief armed conflict between the two called the Walton War, followed by an 1807 survey that Georgia refused to accept.

Ellicott Rock Wilderness is located in the southern tip of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a sub-mountain range of the Appalachian Mountains. It has a temperate climate with an average rainfall of 80 inches per year creating a dense forest with steep, rugged terrain.

The Ellicott Rock Wilderness is located on the borders of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. Bisecting the wilderness is the Chattooga Wild and Scenic River. Ellicott Rock, the year 1811 chiseled deep into the gray stone, is the reason for the name of this botanically significant wilderness area.

Ellicott Rock Wilderness Ellicott Rock Wilderness sits at the southern tip of the hazy Blue Ridge Mountains. Congress designated Ellicott Rock Wilderness in 1975, later expanding it in 1984. The Ellicott Rock Wilderness was designated in 1975 and currently consists of 8,274 acres (33.48 km2) surrounding the point at which Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina come together. It is the only wilderness that straddles three states.

A tiny piece of land, twelve miles wide, was causing political trouble for the settlers in this small corner of the new republic. Today, locals from North and South Carolina and Georgia all enjoy a peaceful coexistence.

The trail ends within the Ellicott Rock Wilderness at the junction of the Ellicott Rock Trail and Slatten Bridge Trail. This is the trail to hike if you want to see the Chattooga River. Designated a Wild and Scenic River on May 10, 1974 the river is protected for it's entire 50 miles.

More Ellicott Rock Trail is a 8.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Highlands, North Carolina that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, and backpacking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

This rock is found inside the Ellicott Rock Wilderness, and it is named Ellicott Rock after its founder. Congress established the 3,300 acre Ellicott Rock Wilderness in 1975. They made additions to the wilderness in 1984 and it now contains 9,012 acres in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

There are several monuments to Ellicott and his work around the country, notably "Ellicott's Stone," a rock placed by a joint American and Spanish survey party in 1799. That stone is in northern Mobile County, Ala., and it's much, much easier to find than our "Ellicott's Rock."
