BEAM robotics

BEAM robotics (from biology, electronics, aesthetics and mechanics) is a style of robotics that primarily uses simple analogue circuits, such as comparators, instead of a microprocessor in order to produce an unusually simple design. While not as flexible as microprocessor based robotics, BEAM robotics can be robust and efficient in performing ...

Swimmers—BEAM robots that move below or on top of the surface of a liquid. Fliers—Robots that use a powered rotor for both lifting and propulsion. With the advancement of technology, more uses are being added to BEAM robots such as using light emitting diodes (LEDs) to light up robots or using developer boards such as Raspberry Pi to give ...

BEAM robots will always have a special place in my heart, I spent so much time looking them up in the school computer lab in the early 2000s. A number of the ones I built still work today. I wish ...

Beam is a telepresence robotic system that can "teleport" you to a remote location, allowing you to move around and interact with people. It is easy to drive and has a large display to improve face-to-face, or screen-to-face, communication. Creator. Suitable Technologies. (Beam was acquired by Blue Ocean Robotics from Suitable Technologies in ...

Mark Tilden is a true robotics lover, having built thousands of robots of all shapes and sizes in the last few decades. During the first part of his career he pioneered BEAM robotics, a philosophy of building robots based on simple analog circuits and control instead of highly-complex systems, leading to low-cost and efficient systems. His bio ...

Mark Tilden coined the term in 1990 in Ontario, Canada. BEAM robots are focused on reaction-based behaviors and attempt to mimic the behaviors and characteristics of living organisms. Aesthetically, they follow the principle of "form follows function.". Designs are related to the desired functionality of the robot.

The way that BEAM robots move depends on the design, with some using multiple motors to enable the robot to move towards a specific location, depending on external stimuli, while others may perform random movements (such as random jumping and rotating limbs). Others may spend their day charging and then illuminate during the night and perform ...

The Beam telepresence robots allow you to 'beam' into a remote location and have a presence there, saving you the time and effort and cost of travelling. The Beam Plus (Beam+) is the latest telepresence robot offering from Suitable Technologies. Designed as a smaller, home-use alternative to its predecessor, the Beam Pro, the Beam Plus ...

BEAM robots. BEAM robots are simple, small robots whose behaviors are inspired by biological phenomena. They are largely the brain-child of Mark Tilden, who developed most of the core circuits. They use commonly available electronic components, including some analog ICs, and most are solar powered.

The Beam is the only telepresence robot to implement this feature as the technology has been patented by Suitable Technologies (the manufacturer of the Beam robots). The Beam robot implements a six microphone system which allows for reduced background noise and echo-cancellation.

With BEAM robotics, the equipments known as WEEEs are valorized, a waste that grows steadily every year, being a major environmental problem (Ilankoon et al., 2018). Although it does not seek to solve this problem, BEAM robotics promotes the recycling of WEEE, attributing added value and a didactic property to it.

Although Beam is transitioning to GoBe Robots, it is still possible to get support for your old Beam robots with help from our Global Beam Support Partner.
